Thrombectomy Unit Upgrade, Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham
Wandsworth Healthcare partnered once again with Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and long-standing collaborator Hilton Cannon to deliver a complete nurse call and medical services infrastructure upgrade for the Thrombectomy Unit at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham.
This critical-care facility supports the rapid treatment of stroke patients and required an advanced, intelligent, and reliable communication system capable of meeting both the clinical and operational demands of a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
Modernising a Vital Care Space
The Thrombectomy Unit forms part of a broader programme of refurbishment across the Queen’s Medical Centre campus, focused on improving patient experience and staff efficiency through modern, interconnected systems.
Working within a decanted ward environment, Wandsworth Healthcare replaced the existing legacy solution with the latest IPiN Evolution nurse call platform: Wandsworth Healthcare’s fully IP system, tailored to the unique requirements of treatment and post-treatment areas. Designed alongside the Trust’s clinical and estates teams, the new solution delivers exceptional flexibility, enabling staff to respond swiftly to patient needs while maintaining a clean, uncluttered environment for critical procedures.
Wandsworth supplied and installed bespoke horizontal Medical Service Trunking (MST) systems throughout the Pre-Treatment, Post-Treatment, and Minor Procedure/Ultrasound rooms. Each trunking unit was designed to provide seamless integration of nurse call, power, data, and medical gas services. Two bespoke configurations were developed to suit the clinical layout — one installed within the Post-Treatment and Pre-Treatment rooms, incorporating twin power outlets for essential and medical equipment, data and equipotential sockets, gas outlets, and IPiN Evolution bedhead units with full handset, reset, emergency, and cardiac call functions; and another used within the Minor Procedure and Ultrasound areas, offering a similar setup tailored to the specific operational needs of those environments.
Additional installations included nurse display screens, indicator lamps, ceiling-mounted sounders, and ceiling pulls within accessible WCs and assisted bathrooms, all fully compliant with HTM 08-03 standards.
The in-hours installation approach minimised disruption to surrounding departments and enabled efficient progress through coordinated collaboration with Hilton Cannon and the hospital’s estates team.
Collaborative Approach
Wandsworth Healthcare’s involvement began during the early design stages, ensuring the nurse call and medical trunking systems were fully coordinated with the refurbishment layout and service containment routes.
The project was phased across a two-year programme, aligning with the Trust’s wider capital improvement schedule. Wandsworth’s in-house project management team oversaw installation, commissioning, and staff familiarisation, ensuring a smooth handover and ongoing operational readiness.
Delivering Clinical and Operational Benefits
The completed installation has transformed the Thrombectomy Unit into a modern, efficient, and technology-enabled environment, enhancing both patient safety and staff productivity.
The IPiN Evolution system offers clear, reliable communication between patients and staff, combined with intelligent call management and system-wide visibility — critical features for a unit focused on time-sensitive, life-saving interventions.
Fully digital and modular in design, the system provides an adaptable foundation for future hospital upgrades, allowing for straightforward expansion and integration with other systems as the Trust continues to modernise its facilities.
This project reinforces Wandsworth Healthcare’s ongoing relationship with Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and Hilton Cannon, built on technical excellence, dependable delivery, and trusted collaboration. By combining advanced digital technology with precision-engineered medical service solutions, Wandsworth Healthcare has helped create a safer, smarter environment that supports the outstanding care delivered by the Trust’s clinical teams every day.
