This month has seen an influx of patients to the brand new, state of the art, £430 million Brunel building at Bristol Southmead Hospital.

For us at Wandsworth however, the site is the result of three years of collaboration and work with Carillion building group on behalf of North Bristol NHS Trust.

The project

The Brunel building brings the facilities of two ageing hospitals, Frenchay and Southmead into one modern site, fully equipped with the latest innovations in healthcare technology.

  1. Working extensively with designers DSSR, architects BDP and no less than 10 healthcare departments, we have overseen the design and implementation of our innovative IPiN nurse call system.

Acting as the hospitals own nervous system, the IPiN nurse call system spans across the 800 bed, 115,000 m2 building and was chosen due to diversity of scale, as one system is able to cover the whole site.

Why IPiN?

As staffing becomes more reliant on technology to augment care, having a single system that works fluidly, is easily adaptable and controlled in one centralised location is essential.

Made up of no less than 7000 components, the nurse call systems unifies critical departments and operating rooms.

Co-ordinating with teams from multiple departments, including neurosurgery, renal, orthopaedics, plastic, adult burns and A&E, we were able to reprogram systems to fit their individual requirements. Because this system is software and IT based, this was often completed with only a couple of days notice and with minimal intrusion.

Better still, our nurse call system was also one of the first specialist systems to be signed off by independent testers.

“Bristol Southmead Hospital is a flagship for the future of British healthcare, providing single rooms, en suite facilities and 4-bed single-sex wards for patients.” said James Luck, Wandsworth Project Manager for the development. “We were delighted to oversee such an important aspect of this project and to be able to contribute to improving the level of patient care available from North Bristol NHS Trust.”
